Mustafa Sert received his M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in Computer Engineering, Faculty of Technology from Gazi University, Turkey, in 2001 and 2006, respectively. In 2006, he is appointed as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Engineering of Başkent University. He also served as the department vice chairman and as a faculty administrative board member of the Engineering Faculty during 2008-2012. From 2009 to date, he has been working as a research associate in projects supported by TUBITAK at the Multimedia Database Lab of the Middle East Technical University (METU), working on machine analysis of semantic content extraction from audio signals and its applications to video concept detection, while holding his assistant professor of Computer Engineering position at Başkent University. He is currently the faculty board member of the Engineering Faculty and senior lecturer at the Department of Computer Engineering of Baskent University. From 2011, he also serves as a board member of the distance education centre (BUZEM) of Başkent University.

Dr. Sert has research and teaching interests in theory and applications of audio signal processing, machine learning, computer vision, and multimedia databases. He mainly focuses on semantic content extraction from audio and video data, audio scene recognition, video concept detection, multimodality, and content modeling for multimedia search and retrieval. He serves in technical reviewing and organization committees of several international conferences including VLDB 2012, FUZZ-IEEE 2015, IEEE ISM (2008-2009, 2017), FQAS 2009, IEEE ICSC 2016-2017, IEEE IRC 2017, and IEEE BigMM 2016. He also serves as a reviewer of the IEEE&ACM TASLP, Springer MTAP, Springer SIVP, and IEEE TFS.

Dr. Sert is a member of the IEEE and the IEEE Computer Society since 2000.
