With the advances in information technology, the amount of
multimedia data captured, produced and stored is increasing rapidly.
Additionally, multimedia content is widely used in many applications in today’s
world, and hence, a need for organizing this data and accessing it from
repositories with vast amount of information has been appeared.
However, traditional systems are not suitable to manage
multimedia data, since multimedia data have their own characteristics, which
differentiate it from simple textual or numerical data. Thus, interpreting this
data in a high-level and human-understandable manner is a complicated task. On
the other hand, it is essential to bridge the semantic gap between the raw data
and the information required by the users. To this end, we develop automated
methods to manage multimedia data, to extract some kind of meaningful
information, and to structure multimedia data by assigning them a contextual
meaning.
