Multimedia Forensics
In
the analog world, media content like photographs and tape recordings have
generally been accepted as a "proof of occurrence" of the depicted
event. In today's digital age, the creation and manipulation of multimedia
content is made simple by digital processing tools that are easily and widely
available. As a consequence, we can no longer take the authenticity of
multimedia content, analog or digital, for granted especially when it comes to
legal evidence. Media forensics, in this context, is concerned with determining
some underlying fact about multimedia content. For example, given an image on
may ask questions such as:
Similar
questions can be asked about audio and video. The above questions are just a
few instances of issues faced quite routinely by investigation and law
enforcement agencies. However, there is a severe lack of techniques that could
help them in finding authoritative answers. Although digital watermarks have
been proposed as a tool to provide authenticity to multimedia, it is a fact
that the overwhelming majority of content that is captured today does not
contain a digital watermark. And this situation is likely to continue for the
foreseeable future. Hence in the absence of widespread adoption of digital
watermarks, the goal is to develop techniques that can help us make statements
about the origin, veracity and nature of multimedia content.

Steganography and Steganalysis
The
development of techniques for audio and image steganography, the practice of
hiding a secret message within an innocuous cover medium, and the wide-spread
availability of tools for it have led to an increased interest in steganalysis
techniques for image and audio data. In this project we pioneered universal
steganalysis techniques for audio and image data. Our approach is based on the
hypothesis that hiding a secret message in audio or image data leaves definite
artifacts that can be detected using statistical analysis. We have built a
package which extracts a number of statistical features from a set of supplied
cover and stego images and then build a classifier, which is then used to
distinguish supplied images as either being clean or stego.
